Walyarra’s CAT 140H Grader - Mine Spec’d
Strengthening Regional Recovery: Walyarra’s New CAT 140H Grader
At Walyarra, our mission is always to go beyond “just doing the job.” We want to build stronger, more resilient communities across the Kimberley. That’s why acquiring a CAT 140H grader isn’t just another asset, it’s a statement of commitment to regional capacity, flood recovery, and local uplift.
A Strategic Addition in a Time of Need
The January 2023 floods were a brutal reminder that when disaster strikes, response and recovery must be rapid, coordinated, and locally grounded. As the region transitions from emergency response toward long-term resilience, infrastructure maintenance becomes critical. Roads damaged or washed out during flood season need constant grading, realignment, and repair to remain serviceable.
While hiring external plant is a fallback, dependency on outside equipment slows us down, drives up costs, and limits control. Because of this, Walyarra has invested in its own CAT 140H grader, enabling us to act faster, lower our reliance on third parties, and deliver cost-effective solutions to communities across Derby-West Kimberley and beyond.
What the CAT 140H Brings to the Table
his isn’t your standard grader, it’s a precision tool for regional recovery and civil infrastructure maintenance. Its capabilities include:
Fine grading & shaping: For restoring flood-damaged roads, airstrips, and drainage shoulders with accuracy
Heavy-duty road maintenance: Keeping unsealed and rural access roads reliable through wet–dry cycles
Versatility under load: With the power and hydraulics to manage stiff material, mixed surfaces, and remote terrain
With this machine, Walyarra can now deliver grading services more reliably, to higher standards, and on our own timeline.
Real Impact for Recovery & Growth
Faster, Smarter Road Repairs
We can mobilise without waiting on external contractors, meaning communities get their access roads back sooner — critical for emergency services, local businesses, and residents.
Cost Savings, Reinvested Locally
By cutting out hire fees and external logistics, we reduce project overheads. Those savings can be reallocated to more works, maintenance, and long-term commitments in the region.
Jobs, Skills & Indigenous Enterprise
We’ve already recruited and trained three local graders/operators, building capability inside the region. This isn't just plant acquisition — it's capacity building, wage opportunities, and local ownership of recovery.
A Trusted Regional Player
Now, Walyarra is better positioned to tender for broader civil and infrastructure contracts in the Kimberley. The 140H elevates our profile and shows clients that we back our promises with heavy-duty capability.
Aligned with Community-Led Recovery
Walyarra’s acquisition of the grader was supported through the Fitzroy Valley Aboriginal Business Program, under the broader recovery funding framework. This is the kind of strategic partnership that matters, funding that builds local capacity rather than temporary fixes. (You might recall DFES’s recent update noting this same support for Walyarra’s grader purchase in their Kimberley Floods Recovery newsletter.)
We see ourselves as more than contractors: as partners in rebuild, resilience, and regional sovereignty.
