Maintenance Grading Commences Across Derby and Fitzroy Valley for SDWK

Walyarra has commenced opening maintenance grading works across Derby and Camballin, supporting the Shire of Derby–West Kimberley (SDWK) in maintaining safe and reliable road access across the region.

These works focus on improving road conditions across town roads, remote access routes and key connections throughout Derby and Camballin, ensuring continued access for communities, stations and regional transport.

Road Maintenance Across Derby and Fitzroy Valley

Unsealed road networks across Derby and the Fitzroy Valley are subject to constant wear from traffic, weather and seasonal conditions. Corrugations, rutting and loss of surface shape can develop quickly, particularly following periods of heavy use or changing moisture conditions.

Maintenance grading restores the road surface by reshaping the running layer, re-establishing camber and improving drainage. These works help extend the life of the road while improving safety and usability across both local and remote networks.

In areas such as Camballin and surrounding roads, consistent maintenance is critical to maintaining access for residents, pastoral operations and essential services.

Plant Supporting Maintenance Grading Operations

To deliver these works effectively across a broad geographic area, Walyarra has mobilised a dedicated grading team operating throughout Derby and the Camballin area.

The operation includes two graders, a multi tyre roller and a semi watercart, supporting both opening grading and ongoing maintenance throughout the year. This combination allows for efficient surface reshaping, compaction and moisture control, helping achieve a consistent and durable finish across varying road conditions.

Using the right plant setup ensures grading works hold up under traffic and reduces the need for frequent rework.

Working Across Remote and Regional Road Networks

The SDWK program covers a mix of town roads in Derby and remote road networks throughout Camballin. These roads are essential for connecting communities, stations and regional infrastructure.

Maintenance activities are prioritised based on road condition and operational requirements, with works responding to surface deterioration across the network. Delivering across this area requires flexibility, as conditions can vary significantly between locations.

Supporting Local Workforce in Derby and Fitzroy Valley

Walyarra continues to prioritise engagement of Indigenous and local workers across Derby and the Fitzroy Valley where possible. Employing locally supports workforce development and ensures regional knowledge is embedded within the project team.

A locally engaged workforce contributes to more consistent delivery and a better understanding of the conditions affecting road performance across the network.

Maintaining Access Across the Region

Reliable road infrastructure is essential for regional communities across Derby and the Fitzroy Valley. Road condition directly impacts access to services, freight movement and day-to-day travel.

Through ongoing maintenance grading works, Walyarra is supporting the Shire of Derby–West Kimberley in maintaining safe, functional and durable road networks across the region.
