Willare Flood Recovery 2026: Gabion Basket Installation Works Commence

Walyarra has commenced works on the 2026 Willare Flood Recovery project, supporting the installation of gabion baskets to stabilise infrastructure and protect against future flood damage along the Great Northern Highway corridor.

These works play a critical role in strengthening embankments, managing erosion and improving the long-term resilience of key road infrastructure across the Kimberley.

Strengthening Infrastructure Through Flood Recovery Works

Flood events across the Kimberley can significantly impact road networks, particularly along major corridors such as the Great Northern Highway. High water flows and erosion can undermine embankments and reduce the stability of road formations.

Gabion baskets provide a durable and effective solution for erosion control. By installing rock-filled baskets along vulnerable sections, these works help protect infrastructure from future flood events while maintaining safe and reliable access.

Improving Delivery Through Practical Experience

As part of the 2026 Willare Flood Recovery works, the approach to installation has evolved based on previous project experience.

Where earlier works relied on a combination of loaders and excavators, the current delivery model has transitioned to using two excavators. This adjustment allows for more precise placement of gabion baskets and improved control during installation, particularly in constrained or uneven environments.

Refining plant selection in this way supports more efficient operations and consistent outcomes across the project.

Safer Lifting Methods for Gabion Installation

The project has also seen improvements in lifting methods used during gabion basket placement.

Previously, heavy chains were commonly used to lift and position cages. The current approach utilises rated lifting straps, which are significantly lighter and easier to handle while still meeting required safety standards.

This change reduces manual handling demands on workers, improves efficiency during installation and supports safer site practices overall.

Continuous Improvement in Civil Construction Delivery

Projects such as Willare Flood Recovery highlight the importance of continuous improvement in civil construction. Small changes in plant selection and work methods can have a meaningful impact on safety, efficiency and overall project outcomes.

By refining delivery approaches based on experience, contractors can improve performance while maintaining high standards of quality and compliance.

Delivering Flood Mitigation Works in the Kimberley

Walyarra continues to support civil construction and flood mitigation projects across the Kimberley, delivering practical solutions that strengthen infrastructure and improve resilience in remote environments .

Through ongoing project delivery and operational improvement, infrastructure across regional Western Australia can continue to withstand the challenges of seasonal weather and remote conditions.
